Communications Committee Chair
Florida Downtown Association – Board of Directors Role
Schedule: Monthly Board meetings (4th Monday at 1:30 p.m.) and monthly Communications Committee meetings.
Term Length: Committee Chairs serve as part of their Board term (3-year Board term; Chair appointments are 1-year, renewable).
Overview
The Communications Committee Chair is a member of the Florida Downtown Association Board of Directors and provides leadership, guidance, and oversight for all communication efforts of the organization. As part of the Board, the Chair supports FLDA’s legal, fiscal, and philosophical responsibilities by ensuring that the association’s message, public presence, and storytelling efforts reflect the mission and vision of downtown revitalization in Florida.
The Chair works directly with fellow Board members, committees, and FLDA staff to elevate the organization’s voice statewide and strengthen member engagement through clear, consistent, and mission-aligned communication.
Responsibilities
Board Leadership
Participate fully as a member of the FLDA Board of Directors and uphold all duties of Board service.
Provide regular updates to the Board regarding communication initiatives, needs, opportunities, and committee progress.
Support the Board’s strategic direction by aligning communication priorities with annual goals, advocacy efforts, and membership engagement.
Committee Leadership
Lead the Communications Committee and maintain consistent communication with its members.
Hold at least 75% attendance in committee meetings and encourage active member participation.
Assign tasks, set timelines, and guide the committee’s annual work plan.
Strategic Communications Oversight
Guide the development of FLDA’s communication goals, messaging framework, and content direction for the year.
Ensure all FLDA communications reflect a consistent voice and support the statewide mission of economic revitalization and historic preservation.
Oversee the creation and review of newsletters, social media content, website updates, member features, press releases, and promotional materials.
Cross-Committee & Staff Collaboration
Partner closely with the Education, Advocacy, Organization, and other committees to ensure consistent messaging across programs.
Coordinate with FLDA staff on publication schedules, content needs, and the execution of communication strategies.
Outreach & Representation
Serve as a visible ambassador of FLDA, helping communicate the importance of strong downtowns and the value of the association’s work.
Encourage districts to share stories, milestones, and successes so FLDA can elevate their impact statewide.
Tasks & Expectations
Attend annual planning sessions and participate in major FLDA events as available.
Maintain working knowledge of all FLDA programs, events, member benefits, and advocacy priorities.
Ensure the Communications Committee operates effectively, meets deadlines, and delivers high-quality content.
Foster a collaborative, mission-driven environment within the committee.
Time Commitment
Approximately 5–7 hours per month, including Board responsibilities, committee meetings, content review, and cross-committee coordination. Time may increase during peak seasons such as conferences or major statewide announcements.
Volunteer Service
Board members and Committee Chairs serve on a volunteer basis with no compensation provided or expected. The Communications Committee Chair role is ideal for individuals passionate about downtown revitalization, storytelling, and strengthening community connections across Florida.
